Starting A Small Clothing Business

How to start a home based business, start retail clothing business, start your own company

If you are a fashion conscious person and have the motivation to start a small business of your own, you might have toyed with the idea of setting up a small business in clothing. Perhaps you like to design clothing, or perhaps you keep ahead of the others on the latest trends in fashion and styles but never got credit for it. By following the steps outlined below you might just start a small clothing business and be an instrument in changing the fashion trends in your locality.

Step 1

You have to form a clear idea of the kind of clothing that you intend to design and sell. Since it is a small clothing store that you are going to start you should banish the idea that you are going to sell everything to everyone. Settle on a specific group of individuals that you want to cater to – babies, toddlers, boys, girls, men, women, expecting mothers, the elders. Do an online market research to find out how you can gain an upper hand over the competition.

Step 2

Take your designs to dress manufacturers and discuss with them the process of converting your design idea into a dress that someone can actually wear. Check out samples of their recent clothing before coming to a final conclusion. Once decided, get an agreement covering details such as the kind of material they are going to use, the costs, sizes and other terms. Find out what redressal action can be taken in case you do not like the final product. Have them send samples to start off. After approval of these samples, see that the various clothing in various sizes are delivered to you.

Step 3

Come to an agreement with the clothes distributor to provide the latest pieces of clothing that they have. You can also search for wholesalers on line. Some such wholesalers are “Fashion Wholesale” and J & R Wholesale. Both these companies supply clothing retailers with the latest in clothes at relatively cheap prices.

Step 4

Subscribe to the major fashion magazines such as “Vanity Fair”, “Vogue”, “Glamour”, “GQ”, “Essence” and “Elle”. You must have a wide selection of styles to select from. Keep an eye on the latest seasonal fashions and base the choice of your clothing and your sketches on them
Step 5

Where do you intend to market your clothing. Keep away from places where there are numerous stores that stock the same kind of clothing that you want to sell. There are many ways to market your clothes – online with a website designed to display your wares; a vendor table on the street or a retail store. If it is a store that you decide on, get a real estate dealer to guide you to the best retail locations in your locality with small renting spaces.

Step 6

Place advertisements where they can be seen and display your best prices. Find out the ad rates in your local newspaper and place well designed ads in them. Let your neighbors, family, friends and acquaintances know that you have started a clothing store (may be even before you do open the store). Get feedback from those customers who visit your store on the kind of clothing that they would like to see and buy from you.

The skills required to successfully run such a clothing are challenging. You have to keep up with the latest trends. Fashion conscious people prefer to wear what celebrities wear. In case you store caters predominantly to women and girls, visit “Forever 21”; a store that carries the latest and the hottest fashion
